BALLET MAGNIFICAT! presents “DELIVER US!” in Johannesburg
America’s premier Christian Ballet Company, Ballet Magnificat!, will present Deliver Us!
Experience one of Ballet Magnificat!’s most popular and longest touring ballets. Deliver Us! is set to the music of Dreamworks’ The Prince of Egypt. This riveting story will jump off the stage and into your life!
Under the blazing Egyptian sun within the shadow of the pyramids, the enslaved Jewish people cry out for a deliverer. One man, Moses, challenges Pharaoh and leads the people to freedom: a vivid prophetic picture pointing to the Easter story of what Jesus Christ did on Calvary.
“Why tell fairy tales when you can bring to the stage such an alluring story of courage and faith that will challenge us to the core?” said Jiri Voborsky, choreographer of Deliver Us!
Deliver Us! was first performed in 2001, and has since been performed for countless audience members in Asia, Europe, North and South America, and the Middle East.
“There’s no denying the emotional power of this company.
These dancers have the kind of lit-from-within presence rarely seen outside the premier companies…”
-Sarah Kaufman, Washington Post
Artistic Director, Kathy Thibodeaux, stepped into the spotlight of the international ballet community in 1982 when she won the Silver Medal at the II USA International Ballet Competition. Inspired by a desire to see the arts restored to the church, and to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the largest possible audience through the medium of dance, Kathy founded Ballet Magnificat! in 1986.
Ballet Magnificat! was the subject of an extensive feature in The Washington Post, titled:
“Religious Conviction Powers Ballet Magnificat: Nation’s First Christian Ballet Company”.
“It may be an exaggeration to say that Ballet Magnificat is single-handedly keeping the fading narrative tradition of ballet alive, but I don’t know of any other company that exclusively performs original works, most of them full-length story ballets. And Ballet Magnificat’s dancers live their ballets.”
“It’s easy to see why this company inspires such passion, but the greater secular ballet world could learn from the commitment of Ballet Magnificat’s dancers – and from its steady production of original material.”
Since its inception in 1986, Ballet Magnificat! has performed before an estimated 12 million people around the world. Today Ballet Magnificat! has grown to include two troupes: Alpha and Omega, performing more than 200 programmes annually across the US and internationally; the Summer Dance Intensive, where students and instructors receive training at Ballet Magnificat’s Jackson, Mississippi, studio; and the School of the Arts, providing ongoing instruction for students ages 3 to adult within a nurturing Christ-centered environment.
