Roodepoort Theatre will become a living archive of South African musical heritage with Legends Live On: A Standing Ovation for the Soundtracks of a Generation. This powerful tribute concert celebrates David Mabaso, the last surviving member and legendary bass player of The Big Dudes—the iconic band that helped shape South African pop music alongside the incomparable Brenda Fassie.
Produced by Jacky Carpede, with Lebohang Pangwa and Michael Phillips as Musical Director, the evening unfolds in two dynamic sets. The first offers an intimate journey into Mabaso’s legacy, spotlighting his unforgettable groove on Weekend Special that earned him the nickname Mr Weekend Special. The second set reimagines the band’s timeless artistry, bridging past and present with performances that honor their role as the soundtrack of a generation.
